‘Yelling’ heard from Hamilton home at centre of homicide probe

Police were called to the Hamilton suburb of Rototuna about 2am Wednesday.

The scene has been cordoned off and an area examination is underway, Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Neilson said in a statement.The incident unfolded on a quiet cul de sac in a suburb known more for quiet family life and afternoon walks with the dog than houses surrounded with police tape.Gohar Hayat who manages a restaurant in the city was working late before arriving home by 1am.“The street was absolutely normal,” he said.But while combing through some late night emails Hayat said he heard “loud yelling” coming from nearby and went to investigate. He immediately spotted police and eventually an ambulance parked outside a property across from his.“It was a male voice but at that time the police were there,” Hayat said, and he could not tell if it was police yelling or someone inside the house.
He said it was “very unusual” for an incident like this to happen in their neighbourhood.“That house over there, we’ve lived here two years now and we never saw [the residents].”Police and scene investigators were parked along Cranmer Close on Wednesday, with staff in hazardous gear seen erecting a homicide tent just before 11am.According to others in the street the family living in the brick home were of Chinese descent and possibly multi generational.Some said they were “shocked” and alarmed to hear the serious incident that had occurred in their neighbourhood.
