CITY’S FIVE DERBY WINS IN 2023/24

Manchester City’s superb 3-1 Barclays Women’s Super League win over Manchester United continued our sparkling record against our local rivals this term.
The meeting at the Etihad Stadium represented the fifth time the clubs had locked horns 2023/24 – and the stellar success in front of over 40,000 supporters extended our 100% record across Pep Guardiola and Gareth Taylor’s sides.Throughout the clashes, our men’s team have met United twice in the league, meanwhile our women have faced them three times. And in the quintet of triumphs, we scored a combined 14 goals and conceded just four times, while there were seven different goalscorers in sky blue. Here’s how we recorded the memorable victories this term…MANCHESTER UNITED 0-3 CITY (OCTOBER 2023)
The first Premier League Manchester derby of the season saw City deliver a masterful performance at Old Trafford to collect three deserved points. In a battling first half, Erling Haaland’s penalty gave the visitors the lead which did little to represent our dominance away from home. However, after the interval, we continued to put our foot on the accelerator with the Norwegian heading home his second just after half-time.The 23-year-old then turned provider for Phil Foden who extended our lead further when the England international collected Haaland’s pass before coolly dinking into the back of the net.
MANCHESTER UNITED 1-3 CTY (NOVEMBER 2023)
Taylor’s team then made it two wins from two at Old Trafford a month later. After conceding the first goal, the Blues fought back from behind to record a scintillating victory in sodden conditions.Katie Zelem broke the deadlock from the penalty spot after Alex Greenwood was adjudged to have handled in the area, but we flipped the fixture on its head before half-time.Quickfire goals from Jill Roord and Lauren Hemp sent the pocket of away supporters wild at the stadium and it was just what City deserved after weathering an early storm. The visitors then started the second half in similar fashion to the end of the first by tirelessly pressing our opposition which paid dividends when Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw blocked Mary Earps’ clearance which sent the ball flying into the back of the net.Laia Aleixandri was later dismissed for two cautions, but we held on for a memorable WSL victory.

CITY 2-1 MANCHESTER UNITED (JANUARY 2024)
Our final Continental Cup Group B assignment staged the third Manchester derby of the season with Taylor’s side knowing a victory would secure passage into the knockout stages of the competition. After a feisty, but goalless, first half – the hosts at the Joie Stadium found the vital breakthrough inside two minutes of the restart when Chloe Kelly’s clinical strike found the net.Lauren Hemp then added a second shortly after when she bundled home after Kerstin Casparij’s venomous effort was tipped away by Phallon Tullis-Joyce.Although Nikita Parris halved the deficit in stoppage time, we held on for three points which meant we qualified for the knockout stage of the tournament.
