Olympic gymnastics icon Mary Lou Retton suffered a “frightening setback” in her battle with pneumonia and remains in intensive care, her family said Wednesday.

His daughter, Shayla Kelley Schrepfer, told her Instagram followers that Retton was “stepping up” this week and that his loved ones were “making so much progress” as he battled a rare form of pneumonia.

“But yesterday we had a pretty scary setback,” Schrepfer continued. “He’s still in intensive care and we’re working through some of the disruptions he’s had.”

Medical ups and downs took their toll on the 55-year-old Retton.
“He had a better day today, which is great, he’s really tired,”

Retton is best known for winning the individual all-around gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. She also won silver in the vault and team all-around, and bronze in the uneven bars and floor exercise.
